AbstractThis book is an outgrowth of an international seminar held in Bali, Indonesia in 1986 entitled "Improving the Quality of Teaching in the Developing World: Alternative Models." The book contains essays written by 20 authors and coauthors from 12 different countries and is divided into five sections, plus a preface. The focus of section 1, "Recruitment, Training, and Deployment of Teachers," is on factors surrounding the selection, professional development, and placement of teachers. Essays include: (1) "Who Teaches? An International Analysis" (William K. Cummings); (2) "Pre-Service Teacher Education in Developing Countries" (Zainal Ghani); (3) "Case Study: Teacher Training in Vitoria, Brazil" (Jose Coutinho); (4) "Effective In-Service Programs in Developing Countries: A Study of Expert Opinion" (John Andrews; Ian E. Housego; David C. Thomas); (5) "Case Study: The Cianjur Project" (Roy Gardner); (6) "Participatory Approaches to Teacher Training" (Sheldon Shaeffer); (7) "Case Study: Educators Workshops in Chile: Participative Professional Development" (Rodrigo Vera); and (8) "Making the Best Use of Teachers: Deployment Issues" (A. R. Thompson). Section 2, "Classroom Contexts and Instruction," deals with classroom contexts, instruction, and outcomes of teaching. Essays in this section include: (1) "Working Conditions of Teachers" (Paul Hurst; Val D. Rust); (2) "Classroom Teaching Models" (Howard Jones; A. G. Bhalwankar); (3) "Teacher Effectiveness: More Questions about an Old Theme" (Beatrice Avalos); and (4) "In Defense of Traditional Teaching" (Gerard Guthrie). Section 3, "Interventions Mechanisms from the Developed World," addresses teacher renewal and educational improvement in the developed world. The three essays include: (1) "Educational Renewal and Staff Development" (Per Dalin); (2) " Development Agency Support for the Improvement of Teaching in Asia" (H. Dean Nielson; Pauline C. P. Chan); and (3) "Communication Technology Promises Improved Teaching" (Val D. Rust; Ladisalaus Semali). Section 4 draws conclusions and recommendations based largely on information from previous sections of the book and contains the essay "Improving the Quality of Teaching" by the editors. The final section is a comprehensive bibliography of recent works relevant to teachers, teacher education, and teaching in the developing world. (EH)
