| Abstract | This guide is designed to help secondary school teachers include African literature in their classes. It furnishes English and social studies teachers with a foundation for teaching African literature by offering critical commentary on the texts themselves. A synthesis of anthropological and historical material is presented to help both teachers and students understand the complex issues raised in the selected texts. The guide provides author biographies and annotated bibliographies for those wishing to explore the aesthetic, political, and cultural concerns that have motivated these African authors. The texts covered are: (1) "Things Fall Apart" (Chinua Achebe); (2) "The Joys of Motherhood" (Buchi Enecheta); (3) "Songs of Lawino" and "Song of Ocol" (Okot p'Bitek); (4) "A Grain of Wheat" (Ngugi wa Thiong'o); (5) "When Rainclouds Gather" (Bessie Head); and (6) "Time of the Butcherbird" (Alex La Guma).
