Abstract | This volume is the flagship volume in a series on cognitive strategy instruction. While strategies instruction is particularly appropriate for the learning disabled, it is also very useful for normal learners, especially inner city and minority children. The series focuses on conveying strategies instruction methods for use with these children. The following chapters are included: (1) "Introduction to Cognitive Strategy Instruction" (Barbara Snyder and Michael Pressley); (2) "Decoding and the Beginnings of Reading" (Michael Pressley and Teresa Cariglia-Bull); (3) "Reading Comprehension Strategies" (Michael Pressley, Sonya Symons, Jacqueline A. McGoldrick, and Barbara L. Snyder); (4) "Vocabulary" (Michael Pressley and Linda Lysnchuk); (5) "Spelling" (Vera E. Woloshyn and Michael Pressley); (6) "Writing" (Michael Pressley, Jacqueline A. McGoldrick, Teresa Cariglia-Bull, and Sonya Symons); (7) "Mathematical Problem Solving" (Michael Pressley, Jacquelyn Burkell, and Brynah Schneider); (8) "Science" (Vera Woloshyn and Michael Pressley); (9) "Learning Facts: The Value of Always Asking Yourself Why and Other Mnemonic Strategies" (Michael Pressley and Vera Woloshyn); and (10) "Getting Started Teaching Strategies" (Michael Pressley). An appendix lists additional sources of information about strategies. Each chapter contains references. (Contains 30 tables and 20 figures.) (SLD) |
