AbstractThe expanding needs of children today demand effective prevention and treatment programs. Some model programs that address these needs are described here. Schools are now being called upon to serve a population with a tremendous multiplicity of physical, social, emotional, and academic problems in an atmosphere of public dissatisfaction with education. If reforms are to be realized, school psychologists will need to shift time away from psychoeducational assessment toward the promotion of healthy development. More collaboration and an emphasis on consumer satisfaction will be required. Current thinking and best practices are explored here in 85 chapters. Part 1, "Children's Social Needs: Development, Problems, and Alternatives," presents 22 topics under "Social Competencies,""Conduct Difficulties," and "Related Issues." Part 2, "Children's Emotional Needs: Development, Problems, and Alternatives," includes chapters on self-concept and related difficulties. Part 3, "Children's Academic Needs: Development, Problems and Alternatives," includes 13 topics in the areas of motivation and learning, classroom practices, and other related issues. Part 4, "Children's Family-Related Needs: Development, Problems and Alternatives," offers 22 articles on family organization and practices, family-based problems, and family and culture. In Part 5, "Children's Health and Wellness Needs: Development, Problems and Alternatives, physical impairments, diseases and injuries, psychophysiological problems, and intervention-related issues are examined. Includes an index. Contains references and resources. (EMK)
