| Abstract | This issue of the children's quarterly magazine, "The Goldfinch," focuses on newspapers in Iowa's history. Articles address Iowa's pioneer press, a tiny newspaper published by a pair of Iowa brothers, and handwritten newspapers. Activities, fictional accounts, and nonfictional articles address the importance of newspapers in Iowa's past and present. One article explains how newspapers were produced with typesetting and Linotype. Other articles discuss the importance of accuracy and reliability in the stories newspapers tell and record for history, the contributions of Iowa's first African-American newspaper, "Colored Advance," in 1882, and subsequent African-American newspapers in Iowa. An article by the winner of the 1997 "Write Women Back into History Contest," Abby Cox, is also included. (EH) |
