AbstractThese guidelines are intended to provide basic background information on the use of educational interpreters in the education of deaf and hard of hearing students in New York State and to describe standards for the employment of interpreters in school districts, private programs, and other educational agencies in the state. After the introduction, the first section provides standards for the roles and responsibilities of the educational interpreter. A definition is provided, as are guidelines for interpreting in both the classroom and nonclassroom settings. Also addressed are the interpreter's role as a member of the educational team and the interpreter's noninterpreting responsibilities. The next section examines primary roles and responsibilities of the school, to provide students and parents with meaningful access to the educational process and to follow appropriate hiring and supervision standards. The third section considers skills and preparation of the educational interpreter, including interpreting skills, interpersonal skills, general knowledge, specialized knowledge, and knowledge of history, principles, and practice of education. Appended are a sample job description, a glossary, a list of resources, and a list of Special Education Training and Resource Centers. (DB)
