AbstractA study examined repair in native-nonnative (Mandarin) speaker English conversation, focusing primarily on the previously unobserved lexical element "yeah" which occurs in a speaker's ongoing or same turn at talk. Conversational analysis was used to examine the data collected and transcribed. The data was composed of roughly 120 pages of transcript, consisting of naturally occurring telephone conversations from 12 native speaker (NS) and nonnative speaker (NNS) dyads. The speakers were friends who ordinarily have occasion to chat with one another, and topics were not suggested or assigned. Results indicated that, on some occasions, NNSs use the resources of the language to create new or alternative ways of dealing with troubles in talk and, in so doing, they display their identities as NNSs--as speakers and learners of the language of interaction at one and the same time. Findings reveal how dynamic and sequentially attuned oral practices are. Findings also suggest the resources of the language which second language learners of English bring to the interaction may, at times, be different from those deployed by native speakers.
