AbstractIn 1992, the U.S. Department of Education, through its National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), surveyed the mathematics performance of approximately 250,000 students through two comprehensive surveys: (1) the National Assessment and (2) Trial State Assessment. The National assessment surveyed approximately 26,000 fourth, eighth, and twelfth grade students attending public and private schools. The Trial State Assessment included a representative sample of approximately 220,000 fourth and eighth grade students attending public schools in 44 states. The sample also contained 25,000 students of Hispanic and Asian origin. The purpose of this study is to compare the background characteristics and the mathematics performance of the fourth and eighth grade Hispanic and Asian students that participated in the 1992 NAEP Trial State Assessment and to determine how their mathematics performance varies as a function of their demographic characteristics, English competence, school-related attitudes, and school behaviors. Appendices list the variables selected for descriptive analysis, variables selected for multiple regression analysis, and procedures related to analysis. Contains 17 references. (ASK)
