AbstractThe report is designed to inform members of college and university and administration governing boards about facts and issues surrounding acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) so that they may develop education and prevention programs for their institutions and ensure protection from accidental exposure in on-campus health care professions and HIV-related services. Chapters address these topics: HIV infection and AIDS (spectrum of HIV infection, virus characteristics, transmission and epidemiology, testing, treatment, and prevention); the impact of HIV infection on higher education (people with HIV, education for prevention, student risk factors, underserved campus populations, financial and nonfinancial costs, elements of campus response, service and care programs); issues and concerns for governing boards (monitoring policies and programs; prudent management of resources; the institution as resource, partner, and leader; the board's role as citizen; and guidelines for board response,(preparation and guidelines for action). The American College Health Association's General Statement on Institutional Response to AIDS is appended. (MSE)
