AbstractThis resource guide provides information on community service-learning activities for rural students. The guide is based on focus-group sessions in which participants from five rural Appalachian counties identified community service activities that would enhance students' academic success, improve their transition from school to work, and address the development needs of rural communities. Participants included representatives of business and labor, educators, officials of tech prep and school-to-work programs, and community economic development leaders. Selected sites were counties that had applied to be designated as a federal rural Empowerment Zone or Enterprise Community or counties that had a high school implementing a tech prep curriculum. Sites represented various economic bases. The guide describes the major community and economic development issues and related student service-learning activities for each of the five sites. Tables list the activities, along with each activity's skill development rating assigned by focus-group participants and the academic value rating assigned by high school teachers. Also included are a directory of 30 Internet sites related to service learning, community service and volunteerism, and state commissions on community service, and 16 abstracts of documents related to community service-learning available through ERIC. The appendix includes demographic information on the five sites. (LP)
