AbstractA qualitative study examined what happens to the learning environment when a heterogeneous group of male adults uses technology and collaborative strategies to improve their writing skills. During the 14-week study, the teacher modeled the use of technology when introducing units in a writing course and used the abilities and strengths of the adult learners in the classroom. Working in teams, the students learned to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to complete their assignments, projects, and research papers. Data were gathered through jottings collected from the students, with classroom videos, student evaluations, and surveys used to validate the findings. The data showed that the highly collaborative environment was facilitated by the use of technology and teacher strategies. The environment was highly social, and the students were engaged with one another in the sharing of language and knowledge while using technology. The classroom was transformed by the concurrent use of technology and collaboration. (Research notes and student surveys make up the bulk of this document.) (KC)
