| Abstract | The existing education indicators for performance and achievement fail to provide relevant information about what young adults at the end of education need in terms of skills, and in particular, whether they will be able to play a constructive role as citizens. Does education provide the basic knowledge and skills needed for living an individually worthy and socially valuable life? This report presents the preliminary findings of an international pilot study that sought to build a new category of education indicators for the Cross-Curricular Competencies (CCC) project and to test instruments for appraising the results of education. The work was carried out within the framework of the International Indicators of Education Systems (INES) Project of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The CCC project seeks to develop indicators for four specific domains: problem solving and critical thinking; communication skills; political, economic, and social values; and self-perception and self-confidence. The report presents the findings of an extensive 1994-95 pilot study that was conducted in nine countries or communities (Austria, French and Flemish Belgium, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, and the United States). The data show that two out of the four domains can be developed to meet scientific standards. Six figures, 10 tables, and 10 endnotes are included. (Contains 46 references.) (LMI) |
