Abstract | This paper describes the Buddy Program for international teaching assistants (ITAs) at Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing and presents brief case studies of the program in action. The Buddy Program pairs new ITAs with undergraduates at MSU to help familiarize ITAs with student life at the school and help them assimilate into their new role as teaching assistants. Over the course of 8 weeks the ITA-undergraduate pairs spend about 25 hours together and share life stories, visit student residences and classrooms, and explore such topics as student employment, student academic decision making, extracurricular activities, how students study, teacher-student interaction, and optional topics. Vignettes illustrate how ITAs come to appreciate the differences and similarities between student life at MSU and in their home countries. (MDM) |
