AbstractThe data in this report provide facts about the extent to which national, state, and local governments commit resources to educate youth. Current information is presented about public school enrollment and participation, employment and compensation of personnel, and finances, as reported by state education departments. The state-level data featured permit broad assessments of trends in staff salaries, sources of school funding, and levels of educational expenditures. Data should be used with the understanding that reported state totals and averages may not reflect the varying conditions that exist among school districts and schools within a state. After an overview that summarizes significant developments in public school statistics, specific attention is paid to: (1) trends; (2) general administration; (3) students; (4) instructional staff; (5) revenues; and (6) expenditures. As enrollment and expenditures are increasing, the federal contribution remains at about the same level, forcing state and local governments to meet the expanding financial needs of public education. Twenty-three graphs illustrate educational trends. Eleven tables present the state-by-state data. (SLD)
