Abstract | This document reports on a visit to the United States by individuals involved in Regional Education Centers (ROCs) in The Netherlands. The purpose of the visit was to study the phenomenon of community colleges as an example for ROCs in Holland. This document is the third in a series of reports that appear in connection with "The Transatlantic Connection," an exchange program with U.S. community colleges. The document provides highlights of the visit, including attendance at the American Association of Community Colleges conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and visits to the Madison Area Technical College in Wisconsin, the Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, D.C. The purpose of the study was to gather knowledge about U.S. community colleges and to make recommendations for the City of The Hague in the Netherlands. Recommendations and conclusions focus on the following: study environment, faculty, school organization, use of volunteers, student services, counseling, provision of student handbooks, students networks, incorporation of a customer-oriented attitude, quality assurance, investment in technology, and personal development.
