Abstract | Although this training manual was developed as a tool for trainers of African American and rural family caregivers of elders with dementia, it can easily be adapted for trainers of caregivers (both formal and informal) of persons other than those with dementia. The first section educates potential trainers about dementia, rural issues, ethnic competence, adult learning theory, and strategies for conducting workshops. An extensive list of references accompanies most chapters. Tips for trainers, suggestions for outreach, a sample press release, and answers to evaluation (study) questions are also included in this section. The second section consists of comprehensive lesson plans sequenced according to the progression of dementia. Its purpose is to provide single-source, ready-to-use materials and to minimize preparation time for trainers. Each lesson plan includes a goal, rationale, educational objectives, lecture information, audio-visual materials, suggested learning activities, and references and suggested readings. The appendix includes information on the Virginia Center on Aging, program replication, and project associates and trainers. (LP) |
