Abstract | Two closely related publications from the same project, a Teacher's Manual" and a "Technical Manual", are combined here. These manuals are intended to accompany a work force literacy course designed to meet the basic skills needs of midliterate adults employed or preparing for employment in the health insurance industry. Introductory materials: define functional context education; describe key features of the program, including its simulation approach, learners' personalized individual Learner Data Disks, and bookmarking; and detail how to use the program. Descriptions follow of the five modules in the program. Module 1 teaches learners how to use the computer; each learner must complete this module before any others. Modules 2-5 may be completed in any order. They teach basic skills required for entry-level jobs in the health insurance industry: medical terminology, reading claims forms, clear writing, and using manuals. The keys used in the module and the activities are described for each module. The technical manual consists of two chapters. Chapter 1 describes IBM system requirements, Macintosh system requirements, and installation procedures for IBM and Mac. A minitutorial walks the user through the courseware. It helps the user get started using the courseware and introduces key concepts at strategic points. Chapter 2 covers the control panel, using the mouse, and using learner data. Three appendices include a computer terms glossary, information on formatting and copying floppy disks, and an Institute for the Study of Adult Literacy (ISAL) computer bug report form. (YLB) |
