AbstractThe text covers the phonology and grammar of the variety of Inupiaq, an Eskimo language, spoken in northwestern Alaska. A introductory section explains and maps the geographic distribution of Inupiaq dialects. Subsequent chapters address these topics: pronunciation; phonological processes in Inupiaq; Inupiaq morphology; intransitive verbs; absolutive nouns; intransitive verbs and indefinite objects; locative, terminalis, and ablative noun cases; transitive verbs; relative nouns and interrogative pronouns; possessed absolutive nouns; modalis, vialis, and similaris noun cases; transitive indicative and interrogative moods; and demonstrative pronouns. Three glossaries (stems, postbases and enclitics, and endings) are appended and the grammar's contents are indexed. The separate 13-page supplement contains a series of 13 North Slope Inupiaq dialogues, with morpheme analysis. (MSE)
