AbstractThe collection of 21 narratives of the Tatl'ahwt'aenn (Upper Ahtna, or Headwaters People) of Alaska focuses on stories about historical events and traditional territory. The stories are told by six elders in Upper Ahtna, one of four dialects of Ahtna, an Athabaskan language. An introductory section offers background information on the population, its history, and the stories. The stories are divided into two sections: stories of Upper Ahtna history and culture, and stories of Upper Ahtna territory and land use. Each section contains an introduction and cultural and linguistic notes as well as the texts. Each text is prefaced by notes on the storyteller and/or the context of the tale, and includes a line-by-line English translation. Maps and photographs illustrate the texts. Contains 46 references.
