Abstract | Published jointly by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, this document presents information drawn from a nationally representative sample of state prisoners and from existing homicide data assembled by law enforcement agencies. It sheds new light on the most serious types of child abuse and victimization--those offenses for which a term of imprisonment was imposed or in which a child was murdered. The document contains detailed statistical information on the following: (1) violent offenders who committed crimes against children; (2) criminal histories and characteristics of offenders who have victimized children; (3) characteristics of child victims of violent crime; (4) characteristics of the violent crimes experienced by children; and (5) the victims and offenders in child murder. The document also includes a section offering explanatory notes, including a discussion of methodological issues involved in the study and listings of the numerical data from which 24 graphs presented are drawn.
