Abstract | This report presents the findings and recommendations of a workshop regarding the effect of international economic and technological changes on graduate student training in the physical sciences and mathematics. Concerns identified about current graduate training include the declining availability of public resources to support training, the narrowness of the skills and knowledge acquired by new doctoral graduates, the increasing emphasis on the research component of graduate experience, and the low level of diversity among graduate students. Recommendations for programs and procedural change regarding these findings are presented. (JPB) |
