| Abstract | "Adat" is a term in Indonesia that defines culture, customs, and traditions to foreigners, but to the people of Indonesia it means basically the rules of the village life. Villages are predominant and overseen by chiefs. Adat's rules are the roots of Islamic religion. Many of Indonesia's environmental policies stem from the teachings of Adat. While the people live Adat's religious philosophy, they naturally abide by the rules in balancing their environment and adhering to the government's policies. An important factor for preserving the environment is involving village communities at all local levels. A list of six related readings concludes the paper. Five photo copies of articles associated with Indonesia's environment are provided. (JAG) |
