Abstract | This brief guide to the Research Programs Division of the National Endowment for the Humanities covers basic information, describes programs, and summarizes policies and procedures. An introductory section describes the division and its mission to encourage the development and dissemination of significant knowledge and scholarship in the humanities. It also provides the Division's definition of humanities, notes presidential directives and special initiatives, discusses eligibility and choosing programs, and lists things that the Endowment does not support. A central section describes each of the Division's programs in turn: fellowships, summer stipends, the graduate study program for historically black colleges and universities, dissertation grants, editions, translations, subventions, reference materials, basic research, archeology projects, humanities studies of science and technology, conferences, centers for advanced study, and international research organizations. An example of a typical application is provided for each program. A final section on policies and procedures covers applications, evaluation criteria, the review process, project budgets, outright and matching funds, cost sharing, general advice, application deadlines, and a list of staff with their telephone numbers.
