AbstractThis curriculum provides American Indian youth with a framework for learning about the effects of alcohol on the body and the community. The curriculum stresses the development of scientific thinking skills and was designed for upper elementary and middle level students. The guide consists of four units: How Does Alcohol Circulate through the Body and Community?; How Does Alcohol Deprive the Body and Community of Energy?; What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and How Does It Affect a Community?; and How Does Alcohol Impact the Brain and the Community? Units explore the meaning of community and discuss types of communities, ways communities solve problems, and how alcohol contributes to the breakdown of community values and functioning. The involvement of community members helps to provide meaningful applications of what students learn through the curriculum. Each unit includes an Indian story that allows students to draw upon traditional knowledge to better understand problems associated with alcohol. The concept of the medicine wheel is emphasized throughout the curriculum to provide students with a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to studying the effects of alcohol. Each unit also includes a holistic statement, goals and outcomes, interdisciplinary connections, instructions for student journals, instructions for use of a student sharing box, alcohol and science background summaries for teachers, science learning activities, unit review activities, small group activities, needed materials, teacher preparation, and assessment.
