Abstract | This career education program for high-school students has been tested primarily with grade 11 students but is suitable for all students at the high school level. The program consists of five modules and a facilitator's manual--the student kit contains the five modules: (1) Self-explorations; (2) occupational choices; (3) supports for success; (4) breaking the barriers; and (5) lifestyle choices. The program's purpose is to promote student responsibility for both learning and attitudes by teaching students how to apply problem-solving skills to various situations. Through introspection and self-analysis, students learn not only to understand their needs and expectations from life, they also see how their attitudes and experiences affect their relationships with others. The book provides students with ample opportunities to expand their knowledge of occupations, while giving them a variety of strategies to focus their search. Experiential activities allow students to explore their interests, skills, values, and supports. Students learn to assess their perceptions about stereotyping and its effects. Role play, scenarios, and case studies allow students to see issues from different perspectives. Students learn to recognize inequities and see them as something that can and should be overcome. Students are encouraged to keep a journal during this process. The facilitator's manual parallels the student modules. It provides an overview to each major topic and offers discussions of useful teaching techniques for the program topics. (RJM) |
