Abstract | This book provides adult educators with a blueprint for developing a profoundly different approach to leadership that is all-embracing of ideas and people, capitalizes on diversity, and remains open and responsive to change. Chapter 1 introduces this new approach that has its foundation in the arts, humanities, and sciences. Chapter 2 examines a new perspective that has become part of society and that is referred to as the emerging age. Chapter 3 considers historical and contemporary perspectives on leadership, discusses leadership myths that must be dispelled, and describes a new kind of leadership for adult and continuing education. Chapter 4 outlines a process for writing a personal philosophy of leadership. Chapter 5 focuses on leadership beliefs and values. Chapter 6 explores metaphors for adult education leaders and qualities and characteristics that will be required of leaders. Chapter 7 discusses leadership outcomes and reviews vision and mission statements. Chapter 8 is about approaches to leadership. Chapter 9 focuses on educational perspectives and the ways in which they are changing. Chapter 10 addresses taking charge of one's own development. Chapter 11 is about the process of transformation and how it applies to leadership development. Chapter 12 discusses challenges for adult and continuing education leaders and offers suggestions for organizing and operating leadership development programs.
