| Abstract | Since 1988, Public/Private Ventures of Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) has been conducting a series of studies of mentoring programs for at-risk youth. As part of this effort, the recruitment and screening procedures used by Big Brother/Big Sister (BB/BS) agencies were studied in eight cities. Recruitment for the high-profile BB/BS agencies is not as difficult as it is for some programs, but program administrators generally do not recruit as many minority-group volunteers as they would like. A volunteer must complete an application, attend an orientation, pass a criminal-records check, give references, and attend a training session. The personal interview is the centerpiece of the screening process. Across the agencies, fewer than half those who inquired actually initiated the process, and only approximately one-fourth actually were matched with students. Recommendations are made for the improvement of the volunteer-intake process, with special attention to the initial request for information. Five tables and two figures present study information.
