AbstractDesigned as a guide to accreditation for educational programs in designated health science professions in Canada, this report provides educators with guidelines, general requirements, and requirements for specific programs. Following information on the organization, structure, goals, mission, values, philosophy, and terminology of accreditation of health science programs in Canada, part I provides general requirements and guidelines for educational programs. Guidelines are presented with respect to responsibility for educational program, program committees, program objectives and student evaluation, program structure and delivery, didactic/clinical integration, direction/coordination at program sites, didactic program staff, clinical education, instructor/student ratio, medical input, program records, program policies, educational facilities, recommended number of students, and total program evaluation. Part II provides specific accreditation requirements and guidelines for programs in each of the following health science disciplines: cardiovascular perfusion; cytotechnology; diagnostic ultrasound technology; emergency medical technology (levels I, II, and III); medical laboratory technology; nuclear medicine technology; ophthalmic medical assisting technology; radiation therapy; radiological technology; and respiratory therapy. Part III discusses accreditation procedures, covering categories of accreditation and non-accreditation; the accreditation process; responsibilities of an accredited program site; terms of reference for surveyors; sample applications for accreditation; and sample program assessment.
