Abstract | This packet was designed to help teachers maximize a visit to a zoo's Africa exhibit. The packet provides two levels of activities, grades 3-5, and grades 6-8, for use before, during and after the visit. Activities are designed to enhance skills taught in science, social studies, language arts, reading, art, and math. A multi-grade background activities section is designed to have students learn about Africa by locating Africa on a world map, identifying the geography of the continent, and learning general facts about Africa. Activities for each grade level grouping are provided in five sections that cover the following topics: (1) geography of West, Central, and East Africa; (2) the rainforest and the savannah habitats; (3) animals and people of the African rainforests; (4) animal adaptations; and (5) awareness of environmental issues. Activities involve students in the use of research skills, oral and written communication, modeling, observing, classifying, analyzing, game-playing, and building vocabulary. A correlation of the activities to the Oregon Common Curriculum Goals in Science and Social Studies Activities is found in the teaching guide. The packet contains a 185-word glossary, a list of 188 African Studies resources, and 23 references. (LZ) |
