Abstract | Throughout the last decade, momentum has been building for the development of early education programs that can provide tremendous advantages for all children. This article pertains to the school board's role in early childhood education. It outlines steps to help school boards develop early childhood education programs at the local level. It describes the board's role in community-school planning, developmentally appropriate education, parental involvement and support, collaboration to provide comprehensive and integrated services, school staff, assessment, and prevention.
