AbstractA study examined tech prep (TP) implementation in the United States. Questionnaires were mailed to a geographically representative sample of 473 of the 855 local TP coordinators identified. Completed questionnaires were returned by 84% of the coordinators surveyed. The study established that as many as 50% of the nation's high schools are participating in a local TP consortium. Coordinators rated student outcomes in 15 of 17 categories as "high" or "very high." Educators, parents, students, and employers were found to be highly supportive of TP, and nearly all consortia had conducted professional development activities for secondary/postsecondary personnel. Lingering challenges facing TP included the following: resource constraints, TP's broad and conflicting goals, and low degrees of implementation of the work-based learning and apprenticeship components of TP programs. Recommendations included calls for increased funding of TP and expansion of the scope/focus of TP beyond the 2+2 concept to include change agents at the elementary, middle school, college, and university levels. (Fifteen tables and 54 references are included. Appended are a table summarizing the survey population, sample, and response rate by state and aggregated responses to the local TP implementation survey.) (MN)
