Abstract | In November 1993, the Canadian Child Care Federation (CCCF) surveyed the child care community to determine whether the Federation's services, publications, and programs were relevant to the providers of child care in Canada. A questionnaire was sent to Federation members, Canadian child care centers, the family day care network, and organizations listed in the CCCF's directory of child care organizations. The typical survey respondent was a child care teacher, working full-time in a child care center, with 10-15 years experience in the field. Study findings, based on responses from 26% of the CCCF membership as well as 224 non-members, indicated that respondents considered CCCF's publications its most important service, and that the top 10 areas of interest for CCCF publications and activities were: (1) wages and working conditions; (2) training; (3) staff development; (4) quality; (4) child development; (6) new resources; (7) funding issues; (8) health and safety; (9) curriculum for early childhood education; and (10) ethics. Findings also showed that 97% of the respondents rated public education as the most important service CCCF could provide, other than publications, and over 90% of the respondents rated national guidelines for training and service delivery as important initiatives for the child care field. Although 86% of the respondents considered CCCF conferences to be important, comments indicated that attendance was often dependent on travel subsidies. (AC) |
