| Abstract | Following a review of the model compensatory education program resulting from the Perry Preschool Project in Ypsilanti, Michigan, this paper describes a study undertaken to test the efficacy of the Perry model as implemented in a preschool program run by the San Francisco Unified School District. The Perry Preschool Project, initiated in 1962, found that an intensive, child-centered curriculum could boost the academic performance and school success of disadvantaged children. The Perry model was used by the 21st Century Academy with an experimental group of 9 kindergarten students from February through June 1993. Fourteen kindergartners participated in a control group that received a standard kindergarten curriculum over the same period. Most of the students were African-Americans from disadvantaged backgrounds. Pre- and posttest results indicated that students exposed to the Perry model curriculum had significantly higher achievement test scores than students exposed to the traditional kindergarten curriculum.
