AbstractThis practicum was designed to decrease turnover of newly hired teachers in a child care center by means of a 12-week orientation and training program for newly hired staff. In 1992, nearly half of the newly hired teachers had left the center within 6 months. Surveys of remaining staff, some of whom had already turned in resignations, indicated that the majority felt that their job responsibilities, the center's goals and objectives, and center policies and procedures were unclear. The program developed and implemented to correct this problem included presentations on personnel policies, center policies and procedures, licensing regulations, parent communication, classroom management, and the goals and mission of the center. An analysis of post-intervention teacher surveys found that the teachers were able to identify the mission and goals of the center, understood school policies and procedures, were aware of state licensing requirements, and could demonstrate an understanding of classroom management techniques. Staff turnover was reduced as a result of this practicum, with 9 out of 12 participants remaining employed at the center for a period of 3 months or longer. (Four appendixes contain copies of the classroom observation checklist, center goals and objectives, policies and procedures survey, and the center's mission and vision.) (Author/MDM)
