AbstractAn informed citizenry is capable of making decisions about economic development that have a potentially positive impact on the environment. This classroom guide is about tropical forests and development in three major regions of the world: Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The resources and activities are organized into three parts. The first section gives the teachers and students basic definitions of forest types, identifies world forest regions, and gives a summary of important development issues in the three regions. Issues discussed include the importance of education about development and the environment, the concept of sustainable development, and the importance of rain forests. The second section is a set of lessons containing 20 activities that present 3 principles for sustainable development: interrelationships and interdependence; stability and change; and human responsibility. The concept, objectives, related subjects, materials, time, background information, and procedures are provided for each activity. The third section contains additional resources for teachers and students that include a glossary of 20 terms, a list of people and organizational resources, and a list of 6 publications and references.
