| Abstract | This book combines a holistic approach to language learning with a developmental point of view, including teaching strategies appropriate for each age and stage of development. The book looks at children's literature and how it is used as the thrust for the development of oral language, reading, and early writing. The book includes: discussion of several theories of learning with practical applications; specific, in-depth descriptions of the characteristics of human development from birth through age 8; vignettes and case studies in which teachers, caregivers, and children interact in different settings; an epilogue-case study which includes many vignettes designed to bring together all of the ideas in the book; and annotated book lists designed for each age and stage of development. Chapters in the book are: (1) The Broad Concepts of Literacy; (2) Foundations for Becoming Literate; (3) Frameworks for Observing Growth and Needs; (4) The First Year of Life: The Foundations of Literacy; (5) The Second Year of Life; (6) The Third Year of Life; (7) The Fourth Year of Life; (8) The Fifth Year of Life; (9) The Sixth Year of Life: Kindergarten; and (10) The Seventh and Eight Years of Life: Literacy and the School.
