Abstract | This document presents information for Saskatchewan administrators who are considering rescheduling the traditional school day or school year. It discusses reasons for changing school schedules and identifies educational, societal, and economic concerns around the change. Steps in the change process include: evaluation/needs assessment; design/validation; implementation/verification; and maintenance/continuation. A sample checklist of criteria for assessing school-calendar proposals is included. Successful examples of school-calendar changes are also highlighted, such as the 4-day week, extended school-year programs, rotating terms, flexible designs, and mandatory attendance designs. The final section describes the various educational, societal, economic, employee, and legislative concerns that any calendar-change program must face. A list of contact groups is included. (LMI) |
