Abstract	This study examined the application of the Basic Direct Instruction Model (BDIM), a methodology designed to maximize student interest in instrumental and methodological courses, to graduate level educational leadership students. The research used qualitative techniques and a participatory approach with a sample of 92 beginning level Masters students at a midwestern U.S. university. The BDIM uses five phases: (1) orientation, (2) presentation, (3) structured practice, (4) guided practice, and (5) independent practice. In this study a battery of practice applications was designed to gather the necessary data. Implications of the study are drawn for first, the adoption of curriculum changes and the use of the BDIM as a strategy to achieve instructional objectives and, second, for seeking congruency among individual, group, and structural organizational elements. The study concluded that, if the fundamental purpose of the course content is to introduce new concepts and acquisition of new skills, then BDIM is the most appropriate instructional strategy.
