Abstract | This packet of instructional materials is designed to give social science students in grades 6-9 a first-hand experience in working out solutions to real-life problems involving the management of California's water. Students work in groups on one of three problems presented in the packet: (1) the management of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta that empties into the San Francisco Bay; (2) the clean-up of the Kesterson Reservoir; and (3) the cut-back of water resources that California receives from rights to water from the Colorado River. Each student in the group is given a specific role to play in the problem, fact sheets with background information about their controversy, a list of players, details about the role they are to assume, and research questions relevant to the problem. After the research is completed, students work together to find a solution to the problem. Additional resources include a California Water Map to familiarize students with California's water geography; a chart indicating California's water system; a Colorado River Water Map; a Layperson's Guide to the Colorado River; a Layperson's Guide to the Delta; a Layperson's Guide to Agricultural Drainage; a vocabulary list; and a bibliography of 40 references of books, reference resources, videos, and other materials related to the topic. The maps are poster-size and have not been reproduced by ERIC. (MDH) |
