Abstract | A practical guide is presented to peer tutoring for teachers and others with an interest in promoting cooperative learning. It includes a guide to organizing peer tutoring, as well as a review of research on the effects of peer tutoring, and evidence for social and academic gains for the student and the tutor. The perspective is international, with examples of projects and methods of evaluation drawn from Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Chapter titles are: (1) Introduction; (2) The History of Tutoring; (3) Examples and First Considerations; (4) Organizing a Project; (5) Structured Planning Guide; (6) Effectiveness Research; (7) Evaluating a Project; and (8) Resource Materials (29 resources listed). Peer tutoring in reading is the most popular use of the approach, but it has been applied to a variety of curricula and situations. Contains 94 references. (SLD) |
