Abstract | This report presents the results of a 1992 study of the performance and management of college and university endowments. Part I offers succinct information on the data collection process, provides definitions, and explains the formula used in the analysis. Part II presents the report's exhibits in two sections. The first section describes: (1) general endowment characteristics, including assets, assets by institution type, institutions ranked by value of endowment, assets per full-time equivalent students, and types of endowments; (2) growth (growth and market indexes, spending rates and rules, and gift flow rates); and (3) asset allocation (including a list of asset allocations by institution). The second and longest section details investment pool characteristics. These include: (1) general characteristics (investment pool assets and institutions grouped by size of pool); (2) performance (nominal returns, range of nominal returns, and real and nominal returns average, compounded, and cumulative); (3) asset allocation (by institution and changes in allocation); (4) turnover and fees (common stock and bond turnover, management fees, custodial fees); and (5) managers and custodians (management structures by institution, bank custodians by institution). Part 3 consists of two appendixes containing a glossary and descriptions of market indexes. Also listed are firms that contributed to funding the study. Attached are a separately published executive summary and a formal acknowledgement booklet listing contributors to the study by level of gift and with brief descriptions of each donor. (JB) |
