AbstractThis guide for 4-H leaders and volunteers offers information to help integrate youth with disabilities into various 4-H programs. After an introduction, a section on 4-H and mainstreaming reviews the mission of 4-H; considers what 4-H has to offer youth; defines mainstreaming; notes the benefits of mainstreaming; and distinguishes among the terms "impairment,""disability," and "handicap." The rights of persons with disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act and other laws and regulations are summarized. Suggestions are then offered for 4-H involvement of young people with the following disabilities: amputations or missing limbs, spinal cord injuries, visual impairments, hearing impairments, mental disabilities, learning disabilities, and emotional impairments. Guidelines for recruiting members, volunteers, and parents cover the importance of having a clear mission statement, involving the disability community, making facilities accessible, adapting visual media, using recruitment techniques, soliciting volunteer help, gaining parent support, clarifying parent responsibilities, and setting realistic goals. Ideas are offered for modifying 4-H projects; a project selection checklist is provided and the use of task analysis to evaluate project suitability is suggested. The final section considers games and activities, specifically adapting games, arts and crafts, and performing arts activities. Three organizational resources and a sample member/parent survey are attached. (DB)
