AbstractThis project is designed to help secondary school students prepare for participation in the electoral process as informed citizens. The project has students focus on current events pertaining to the U.S. election process. They study basic government concepts found in the Constitution, such as Separation of Powers, as well as practices that have become informal institutions, such as parties and nominating conventions. Six to eight weeks prior to an election, students collect, organize, and analyze information concerning the candidates, parties, and issues in the election. From these data, students write a scenario for a "Meet the Candidates" class session, in which students role play actual candidates. The candidate surrogates debate one another in front of their fellow students. The student audience then decides who is the best qualified candidate. They let their opinion be known in a "straw poll." Finally, students follow the results of the actual election on television, radio, and in the press. These materials include the following information: project overview, rationale for the project, objectives, profile of skills and activities, planning the project, implementing the project, evaluation procedures, a selected bibliography for content input, and sample handouts for content input.
