AbstractThis Market Data Retrieval report, based on reports from 85% of all public, private, and Catholic schools in the United States, found that the installed base of microcomputers in elementary and secondary schools exceeded 2.5 million in 1991-92, which is 550% higher than the first report in 1983-84. Other reported findings were: (1) installation of microcomputers is increasing at a lower rate each year, despite little doubt about the growing importance of the microcomputer as an instructional resource; (2) the installed base in Catholic and private schools, while much smaller than in public schools, grew at a higher percentage rate for the first time in recent years; (3) about 89% of installed microcomputers are in public schools, private schools have 5%, and Catholic schools about 6% of the total; (4) the microintensity index, i.e., a measure of the number of pupils per computer in a school, which has been steadily declining in recent years, ranged from a high of 30 students per computer in Mississippi to a low of 10 in Alaska in 1991-92. The tables that make up the major part of this report provide figures for enrollment, number of computers, and the microintensity index for public, private, and Catholic schools in each state and combined totals for the United States.
