Abstract | A 2-year project to develop a dictionary of modern Nepali is described. The Nepali-English dictionary was designed to include high-frequency vocabulary and to treat entries thoroughly, including associated collocations, semantic and/or grammatical restrictions, and other information essential to their use in sentences. Contents include 3,642 main entries and 2,708 subentries, with an English-Nepali index. The computer-based project was completed in Nepal and California. The report describes project objectives, achievements during the first year, objectives for the second year, and dictionary specifications, and a more extensive summary of progress toward second-year goals, including details of the computerization process, resolution of issues in research and manuscript preparation (entry selection, sociolinguistic variation, transcription systems, formatting and production details), and formatting of data (entry sorting, generation of the English-Nepali index, cross-referencing, concordance preparation, manuscript format). Appended materials include a second-year project timetable, a dictionary sample in list format, a sample in paragraph format, an index of band names for formatting, and biographical information about two of the researchers.
