AbstractThe major goal of social studies education is to provide students with the skills and knowledge essential for effective participation in society. As a supplement to more traditional social studies material, newspapers can help students make the connection between the classroom and real life. The social studies activities suggested in this guide use the newspaper as the major resource. They are organized by content area and many promote problem solving, conflict resolution, and analytical skills. There are 97 general social science activities that are considered basic to effective citizenship. History activities require students to consider the records of past events as well as the potential historical significance of current events. Government activities help students relate government classes to the world outside the classroom. There are 102 economic activities and 46 geographic activities that address basic concepts and skills. Some lessons require worksheets which are provide at the end of the document. (KM)
