AbstractThis book provides practical information and advice designed to help family day care providers solve problems they confront in their daily work with children. The book is organized into 7 sections. Part I, "Effective Ways to Change Unacceptable Behavior," offers recommendations about discipline, alternatives to punishment, modeling, and praise. The second section, "Dealing with Individual Children," discusses ways of coping with and caring for strong-willed children; toddlers; children who are victimized by others; children who tattle, lie, or use forbidden words; and difficult children. Part III, entitled "Helping Children Cope with Feelings," deals with such issues as the expression of feelings, adult intervention in squabbles, and separation anxiety. The fourth section,"Teaching and Learning about How to Get Along in the World," discusses infant, toddler, and preschool education; expanding sex roles; the teaching of prosocial and self-help skills; the process of nurturing curiosity; and risk-taking. Part V, "Caregiving Routines," addresses such issues as routines for infants and preschool children, napping, and children's responsibilities in cleaning up. The sixth section, entitled "Play," emphasizes the importance of free play; the process of setting up the environment for play; and the process of teaching cooperation through play. Part VII, entitled "Parents," discusses the role of parents; relations between parents and providers; communication; and multicultural issues. Each section includes a list of suggested readings. Appended are 18 citations to additional resources. (GLR)
