| Abstract | Arabic loanwords in English and Spanish are discussed in separate sections, and the two situations are compared and contrasted. In the first section, Arabic loanwords in English are listed, and their history of incorporation and related research are reviewed. Of these, 27 are defined and discussed in greater detail. The second section addresses Spanish Arabisms, focusing on their history and phonological change. A list of common Arabisms is provided and 28 are discussed in more detail. In the third section, differences in the forms of Arabisms acquired in the two languages are examined and areas for further research are noted. Appended materials include a partial list of Arabic words entering English directly or indirectly, organized by century of incorporation; a list of Arabic words ending in [-i]; a brief article on Arabic solar and lunar letters; a student exercise using English, Spanish, and Arabic; an exercise on English Arabic loanwords; and a chart tracing the origins of "coffee" and "cafe" from Arabic through several other languages.
