Abstract	This book discusses elements of six major areas of controversy which occur between different types of helping professionals. Theme 1 involves identity for the mental health professions. Questions are addressed related to the professional status of various mental health occupations, and who among them shall provide mental health services. Theme 2 involves how and where education and training occur across the mental health professions. Content and form as well as the "culture" of professional training are discussed. Theme 3 involves the credentialing of mental health professionals. Of concern are questions of occupational regulation, restraint of trade, practitioner competence, who will credential, access to certain forms of reimbursement, and other matters. Theme 4 involves legal and ethical issues in the helping professions. Among the major areas of controversy examined are those of the right to treatment or habilitation, informed consent, research use of clients, sexual misconduct, duty to warn or inform, and confidentiality. Theme 5 involves controversies related to theories and techniques used in the mental health professions. Particularly at issue are classifications of behavior, testing and assessment, and the biases inherent in such mechanisms from the standpoint of their relevance and sensitivity to cultural variation among clients. Theme 6 involves the economics of mental health professions, particularly fee-setting in private practice, third-party payment, and the costs and benefits of different forms of mental health delivery.
