| Abstract | A discussion of computer-assisted second language learning focuses on the kinds of computer software currently available and discusses briefly how they can be used in language instruction. Four types of software are distinguished, including: (1) that in which the computer controls, to a great extent, the nature and order of events (e.g., drills, quizzes, exercises, tests, and programmed learning); (2) insertion exercises, in which some piece of information is missing and must be supplied, an innovative approach; (3) tools for editing, correction, etc., which should be made available to students as well as teachers and administrators; and (4) materials containing content but imposing no structured methodology. It is concluded that what computers can do, in general, is supply optimal challenge to students, offering opportunities for students to discover things that even the teacher doesn't know.
